Climbing Area FAQ’s


What are the hours for the Climbing Area?

Monday – Friday: 3:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Saturday & Sunday: 12:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Belay Certification: 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Do I have to complete a waiver or legal participant agreement?

No, the waiver signed upon attaining membership to the UREC is applicable for all recreation areas.

What age to do I have to be to climb?

Any and all ages are welcome to climb! Ages 13 and under must be supervised by a parent or guardian.

How much does it cost?

Free! There are no fee’s associated for UREC Members.

Will there be someone there to help me? Do I have to take a class as a beginner?

There will always be staff on duty to assist and show you the “ropes”. All new climbers will get an orientation to the climbing area, the sport and the gear. Regular visitors must become belay certified through our free, in-house process.

Can I come by myself or do I need a partner/group?

Patrons are encouraged to come by themselves or with a friend. Climbing is a great way to meet new people and make new friends. However, a partner who is a certified belayer is preferred for top-rope climbers.

What is belaying?

Belaying is the process of securing and safeguarding a rock climber by using a climbing rope to hold the climber’s weight if he or she falls.

Do I need special shoes/equipment?

We require a harness and close-toed shoes. Free rentals for harnesses and climbing shoes are available.

Can I bring my own gear?

• Members are welcome to bring their own equipment as long as all load bearing equipment possesses a CE or UIAA certification. As well as passes our staff’s inspection.

What do I wear?

Any athletic wear that complies with the UREC clothing policy.

Does it matter if I have a physical disability?

All are welcome in the UREC! We will make every possible effort to assist persons with disabilities.

Do you offer any sort of classes/competitions/technique courses?

  • We’re currently working on all of our Climbing Area programs.
  • We hope to offer: Lead Climbing Classes, Technique Classes, Climbing Fitness Classes, Competitions and more!

Can I use chalk?

o Due to health and cleanliness policies, only liquid chalk is allowed in the UREC Climbing Area. NO LOOSE CHALK IS ALLOWED.

What is bouldering? What's the difference between bouldering and top rope?!

While you are attached to a rope when top-roping, bouldering requires no such thing. Boulders climb on the bouldering wall to a maximum height of 8 feet from your feet to the ground.

How tall is the tower?

Our tower stand at 35ft tall!

What is the “top-out” for bouldering?

Your feet can’t pass the 8ft mark.

Can I climb barefoot?

Climbing barefoot is not allowed in the Climbing Area.

Can I bring food / drink?

Only drinks in closed containers is allowed in the climbing area. Water only is preferred!
