Laurie Braden is currently the Director of University Recreation at Louisiana State University. She is responsible for the overall leadership of University Recreation and leads a team of 23 full-time staff members, six graduate assistants, and over 200 student employees. Prior to LSU, she was the Director of Campus Recreation at the University of Texas-Brownsville from 2007-2010 where she led the creation and growth of campus recreation from the ground up. Laurie also served as an Associate Director of programs and facilities at Central Michigan University from 1999-2007. She also served in various capacities at Texas Tech University and The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.
Laurie received her B.S. degree from the University of Florida in Recreation Administration in 1988 and her M.S from North Carolina State University in Recreation Resource Administration in 1991. She is a Certified Recreational Sports Specialist, is a graduate of the NIRSA School of Recreational Sports Management and is a member of the NIRSA professional registry. Laurie has been a recipient of the NIRSA Foundation Will Holsberry Scholarship and the Michael J. Stevenson MIRSA Outstanding Service Award. In 1995 and in 1998 she was recognized by NIRSA for outstanding service to the association. Braden is currently serving as NIRSA President.
In 2011 she endowed the Frederick R. Braden Scholarship for Social Justice in Recreational Sports, with the NIRSA Foundation. This scholarship is aimed at recognizing individuals that address the issues of social justice within recreational sports.
Outside of her professional life Laurie enjoys running, working out, reading and playing tennis. From 2000 – 2009 she founded and led a 501(c)(3) non-profit that raised funds to send girls to summer sports camps. She hails from Pensacola, Florida.
